Appropriate Activities for Alleviating Anxiety
Nurses With Heart is excited to add another home health hint to our video blog! Every week we will be posting a short video with hints related to staying healthy at home. This week we are talking about activities to stimulate the brain for people with dementia on the artsy Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Daily mental stimulation has a positive effect on the behaviors associated with dementia – they decrease agitation and other negative emotions. People who are less agitated are less stressed and in turn, sleep better and have healthier immune systems. This increases positive emotions and makes it easier for individuals to cope with their activities of daily living. Activities can include small tasks, such as helping out with a bed bath or larger projects, like solving a puzzle. There is no “one size fits all” type of mental stimulation, so do not be afraid of troubleshooting to try a variety of tasks or diversions to meet the interests of each individual. Please watch and enjoy!
