Caring for the Caregiver
Nurses With Heart is excited to add another home health hint to our video blog – every week we will be posting a short video related to staying safe and healthy at home. This week we discuss helpful resources for family members acting as caregivers for their loved ones.
More than 34.2 million Americans serve as family caregivers for someone age 50 and over. By 2020, 56 million Americans will be 65 and older. And by 2050, that number will reach 84 million, with individuals over 85 tripling by 2040. Ninety percent of those 65 and older wish to “age-in-place”, but will require caregiver assistance to make this possible. Over 80 percent of Americans in their early 70s own their home, which is a large driving force behind wanting to remain at home. While the need for caregivers is high, the stress as a caregiver can take a physical and emotional toll. These reasons are why it is so important to make sure that not only the individual is supported at home but that their caregivers are supported as well, as we review in the video below. Thanks for watching!
